Useful Information

The tides on Mersea are twice daily and sometimes they cover the only road onto the island (The Strood) meaning you can’t cross for one hour either side of high tide. If the predicted tide height is 4.9m or above, allow about 1 hour either side of the high tide time. Allow an extra 30 mins if it is over 5.5m. The biggest tides usually happen when high tide is due between about 12 and 3.30 in the morning and in the afternoon. Outside these times you will probably be fine to cross. Tide heights are affected by the weather and can surprise you.
Remember sea water is very bad for car engines so its better to sit and enjoy the view while you wait.
