About the Watch

The West Mersea Beach Hut Watch (WMBHW) is a voluntary organisation established to promote and protect the interests of owners and users of beach huts in West Mersea. WMBHW organises routine patrols of 464 beach huts and works closely with the local councils and other parties to maintain and enhance the amenities and the immediate environment. We also keep our members informed on relevant local issues and developments.

Membership of WMBHW is open to all West Mersea beach hut owners on the payment of an annual subscription to be determined at the AGM each year. Subscriptions are due annually and membership runs from 1st March to 28th February the following year.

Please find our consitution and rules here.

 Meet the committee

  • Bob Winnington

    Chairman

I am married to Julie with one son and we have owned our beach hut for 6 years and lived in West Mersea since 2018. I took over as the Chair of WMBHW at the AGM in 2021 and the Committee have worked hard to expand our membership, develop wider contacts and connections in the Mersea Community, West Mersea Town Council and Colchester City Council.

In addition to my WMBHW responsibilities, I work as the CEO of The Money Advice Liaison Group, a non-for-profit membership organisation operating in the debt sector.

  • Ann Taylor

    Secretary

We have owned our beach hut for over twenty years and I have been the secretary of WMBHW for the last 8 years. After living in Fingringhoe for 35 years, 3 years ago my husband and I decided to make the move to live in Mersea and now enjoy the delights of living by the sea every day!

I still have contact with Fingringhoe as a Trustee of Fingringhoe Church Green Trust, and also volunteer with Colchester Salvation Army.

  • Adam Scott-Hays

    Patrol Officer

It’s hard to believe that I’m already into my second year carrying out this role - flying solo now that Leah has taken over as Membership Secretary. However behind the scenes the lines are pretty blurred - we both do what we need to in order to keep on top of all that needs doing.

We moved here in the summer of 2021. We didn’t plan to own a beach hut, let alone join the WMBHW, but we’re very happy we still have our hut and are able to help with the organisation. Moving to Mersea was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made and we are enjoying becoming part of a great community.

We’re on the beach most mornings with our dogs, Fred and Ginger, where we have met many other dogs (and owners!) and we get to cast an eye over some of the huts most days when we are there.

Away from the beach, I work full-time as a freelance management consultant in the banking, consumer finance and telecoms sectors.
